12279549_10153343687188160_1632547544_oTheme: Divergent

Focus verses:

  • 1 Timothy 4:12

“Do not let others look down on you because you are young, but rather, set an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.”

  • Romans 12:2

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”

Overview:

As a youth, we are different as a whole generation in the ways we worship and express our faith. We aim to embrace and explore these differences while remaining faithful and devout Christians through the “transformation” and “renewal” of ourselves by looking at how to set an “example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.” Each day will be divided up according to the verse from 1 Timothy. To correlate this verse towards the theme of Divergent, the idea of factions- erudite, amity, candor, abnegation, and dauntless- will be tied to a certain aspect of the focus verse. The verse from Romans 12:2 will be incorporated as well when delegates will be discussing ideas related to the verse from 1 Timothy 4:12.

Speech- “Erudite”:

  • Setting an example “in speech” closely relates to being knowledgeable (“erudite”). Speech refers to what and how a person says something to one another.
  • Focus verse of the day:

Proverbs 17:27

“Whoever restrains his words has knowledge, and he who has a cool spirit is             a man of understanding.”

Love- “Amity”:

  • We are commanded to love our neighbors, our enemies, and to love God. This is a universal message that is easy to understand but sometimes hard to carry out. We will explore “love” according to the bible and how it should be peaceful (“amity”).
  • Focus verse:

1 John 4:7

“Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone      who loves has been born of God and knows God.”

Faith- “Candor”:

  • Faith is our anchor. As youth, we act, talk, think, and even worship differently. We can all use our faith to put all of our differences aside (not just between youth) and use our faith to connect us all. We relate faith to being honest (“candor”) in remain true and honest to ourselves, to our faith, and to God.
  • Focus verse:

2 Corinthians 5:6-7

“Therefore we are always confident and know that as long as we are at home           in the body we are away from the Lord. For we live by faith, not by sight.”

Purity- “Abnegation”:

  • One of our focus verses mentions a renewal and transformation, perhaps to become pure through the Holy Spirit. When we relate this into selflessness (“abnegation”), we become pure by putting others before ourselves, as Jesus put us before himself when he died on the cross.
  • Focus verse:

Psalm 51:10

“Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.”

Conduct- “Dauntless”:

  • We must act confidently, which requires an amount of bravery (“dauntless”) to display our faith. Serving others and God (giving to the poor, acts of kindness) fully embodies our faith.
  • Focus verse:

Philippians 1:27

“Only conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that             whether I come and see you or remain absent, I will hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel.”
